GARDEN TO TABLE

GARDEN TO TABLE IS CHANGING THE WAY CHILDREN THINK ABOUT FOOD

The Garden to Table programme is teaching children the essential skills they need to be food-resilient. All around the country, we want to see children enthusiastically getting their hands dirty and learning how to grow, harvest, prepare and share fresh, seasonal food.

Established in 2008, Garden to Table Trust is a registered charity (CC37743) that works with thousands of primary-school-aged children all across New Zealand, helping them discover a love for fresh food and skills that will last a lifetime. The programme is curriculum-integrated and provides real-world learning opportunities, taking learning outside the classroom.

KEYS ASPECTS OF THE GARDEN TO TABLE PROGRAMME

Garden to Table works best when the sessions are a regular part of the curriculum, much like a PE lesson. During Garden to Table children become involved in all aspects of gardening in an environmentally sustainable garden, cooking and then enjoying delicious, seasonal meals they have produced themselves. The curriculum-integrated programme provides real-world learning opportunities for children outside the traditional classroom environment and is supported by comprehensive online curriculum resources.

Even if you don't have any space for gardens and you don't have kitchen space, you can still take part in Garden to Table. We have lots of suggestions and ideas of ways to make it work!

Garden to Table also has wider community benefits when the children bring home what they have learned about growing, harvesting, preparing and cooking good food. Children develop increased self-esteem, pride in their achievements and pride in the environment, and behaviour improves in some children.
