Living Life to the Fullest John 10:10
In 2026, Pope Leo XIV has declared a special Jubilee Year of Peace, marking 800 years since the death of St Francis of Assisi in 1226. This sacred milestone invites the global Church to pause, reflect, and recommit to the path of peace — peace in our hearts, in our relationships, in our communities, and in our world.
For us at St John the Evangelist Catholic School, this Jubilee resonates deeply. Our Franciscan charism is not simply part of our history — it is beloved and treasured within the life of our school. It shapes the way we lead, teach, learn, reconcile, forgive, and serve. It calls us to humility, compassion, joy, simplicity, and courageous love.
This year, as we respond to the call to be Instruments of Peace, we recognise that peace is not passive. It is active. It is intentional. It is lived through our Head, Heart, and Hands:
Head – choosing wisdom, understanding, and thoughtful response
Heart – nurturing compassion, forgiveness, and empathy
Hands – acting with justice, kindness, and reconciliation
Inspired by the timeless prayer of St Francis — “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace” — we invite our tamariki and staff to become living witnesses of peace in action. In our classrooms, on our playground, in our whānau partnerships, and in our wider Ōtara community, we seek to embody the Gospel call to peacemaking.
As we honour 800 years since St Francis returned to the Lord, we renew our commitment to living life to the fullest by building a culture where faith, love, joy, and peace are not only taught — but truly lived.

St John the Evangelist School is a Roman Catholic primary school offering education with a special character for girls from Year 1 to 8 and boys from Year 1 to 6. We are privileged to serve the faith communities of the parishes of St John the Evangelist and St Peter Chanel, supporting the families of Ōtara and Clover Park with a Christ-centered education rooted in Catholic values.
At the core of our mission is the call to encounter Jesus Christ, grow in knowledge about Him, and live as His disciples. We seek to nurture faith, hope, love, compassion, and respect for the dignity of every person, recognizing each individual as made in the image and likeness of God. Our Catholic values inspire us to prioritize service to others, a commitment to justice and equity, care for creation, and the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of life.
Through our general programme, religious instruction, and observances, we guide our students in developing a deep, personal relationship with Christ, fostering their spiritual, emotional, social, and academic growth. This foundation empowers them to live out their faith as active disciples, positively contributing to their communities and the wider world.
Our school operates under the proprietorship of the Bishop of Auckland, Most Reverend Stephen Lowe.
At St John’s, we are deeply committed to upholding the dignity of every person, created in the image and likeness of God. Through our teaching programmes and resources, the Board of Trustees ensures that our school’s mission, vision, and charism are lived out daily, enabling every student to “live life to the fullest” and receive a quality Catholic education.
We achieve this by fostering life-long learning, which is central to the spiritual, emotional, social, and academic success of our students. A successful graduate of St John’s will leave with the skills and values to thrive and continue building on these foundations throughout their lives.
We entrust our plans to your prayers, seeking the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St John the Evangelist, and all our school’s patron saints.
